Check Your Cover
Make sure your insurance policy covers you for breakdown, or take out breakdown cover – this means help will be on its way if you get stranded anywhere. It is recommended to make sure you always have your providers contact details with you.
Carry a Winter Equipped Breakdown Kit
If really bad weather is forecasted, make sure you have your breakdown kit to hand. Some essentials include:
- A torch
- Hi-visibility vest
- Ice scraper / de-icer,
- Plenty of food and drink supplies,
- Your mobile phone with plenty of power (possibly a power pack too!)
All the above will be able to cover you for any situation the winter conditions have to throw at you.
Check the Condition of Your Tyres
This time of year it is very common for tyre pressure to drop, make sure you check them regularly to make sure there is enough air in them. Your tyres are an important part of your safety as they have an effect on steering and braking, so make sure they are kept in good order and that the tread depth does not go below 1.6mm.
Check Your Battery
Your battery is, of course, one of the cars most important factors as it will not get far without one! Remember that during winter it will be drained quicker than normal, it is hit by the colder temperatures and then you have to factor in the extra use of lights, and the heater too. With this in mind, if your battery is showing any signs of trouble, get it replaced, rather than risk getting caught out.
Clean Your Lights, Windscreen & Wipers
You should wash your windscreen well both inside and out, make sure your screen washer fluid is topped up and look out for any marks or chips on your windscreen (these can turn into huge cracks as the cold weather sets in). Make sure all lights, indicators and the rear reflectors are clean and in full working order. Also, make sure your registration plate is clean and can be read.
Many of these checks will only take a couple of minutes to complete, and even the ones that take slightly longer are essential to keeping you safe when you are out and about.
