Booking A Rental Van? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

For most people, a van isn’t something they ever consider buying outright. The ability to be able to rent, or hire, a van when you do need one is a fantastic option and much more cost-efficient than buying one, even second-hand.

Whether you want to move some furniture, transport a large purchase back home or just move some old stuff to the tip, renting a van offers a wealth of options for you. If it’s something you’re considering, we wanted to share with you some of the dos and don’ts of renting a van, together with some of the information you’re going to need to make the process super smooth.

Time to Rent a Van

If you’re looking into van hire, then there are a couple of things you’ll need to make it possible. Providing the van you want weighs less than 3.5 tonnes, then you can drive using your standard full UK driving licence. Most rental companies will require the person driving the van to be 25 years of age and have had their licence for at least two years or more. Head over to our Terms & Conditions for more information on age restrictions.

Assuming all the necessary personal checks are complete, there are a couple of things to look for before you head off. Before you sign the rental agreement, it’s a great idea to take a look at the document you’re signing in more detail.

While you don’t necessarily need to read it word-for-word, it’s a good idea to pay special attention to the terms concerning insurance, any financial excess in case of an accident or damage. Should there be any problems later on, it’s this document itself that’s going to provide the basis of any claim, so you need to understand what you’re signing up for.

Also, check what to do if you were breakdown or have an accident. Each rental company is different, we have an emergency out of hours telephone and can be reached at any time day or night.

With all the Ts crossed and the Is dotted, it’s time to get a little hands-on with the van. Checking it before you take it out on the roads is essential. Check for any existing damage and point it out to the person checking out your vehicle. They can record it, so you won’t be held liable for it afterwards. Make sure the tyres are fully inflated, the lights and indicators all work, which side the fuel cap is on and the windscreens are dent and crack-free. If it’s all safe, then you’re good to go!

If you take this advice on board, then hiring a van is going to be a fantastic experience for you. Just being higher in the seat than most road users gives you a refreshingly new take on driving.  Go get a van and get all those jobs you’ve been putting off done in style!
